Petras Būtėnas was a researcher of Lithuanian language dialects, prepositions, toponymic, who has added greatly to the preparation of Lithuanian vocabulary, who composed Lithuanian Ethnology Knowledge and Antiquities Gathering Program, created a term of ethnology, wrote a manual on accentuation. He was the director of Panevėžys Boys’ Gymnasium of that time (currently the Gymnasium of Jonas Balčikonis), and published the weekly newspaper “Išlaisvintas panevėžietis” (Liberated Resident of Panevėžys). He built this house in Jakštas street himself. After his death, the family took care of the house and preserving P. Būtėnas memory. His son Donatas Būtėnas with his own money brought back his father’s archives from Toronto, which are being stored in this building, and in accord with the owners, can be accessed by society.
