Krekenava Minor Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Aleksiejus and Stanislovas Vizgirdas-Vizgirdavičius, the owners of Rodai manor, built a wooden church in 1484. Krekenava parish with all its property was donated to Jurgis Talaitis, the archdeacon (assistant bishop at the cathedral) Samogitian Chapter, in 1527. In the first half of the 18th century, the church burned down. Archdeacon Antanas Valavičius restored the church in 1736. Pastor Pranciškus Žukauskas, appointed to Krekenava in 1886, took care of the construction of a brick hurch. The current brick church was built according to the project of architect Ustinas Golinevičius in 1902. Since ancient times, Krekenava has been famous for its painting of Our Lady. The church is built in the style of Historicism with Neo-Gothic elements. It has a rectangular plan, two towers, with a narrower and lower apse, and three naves in the interior.
