Museum of Christmas Decorations

In 2010, the Miežiškiai librarian Violeta Karklytė had an idea to curate an exhibition – “My Childhood Christmas Tree”, initiating locals to part with their antique and post-soviet Christmas decorations. Within two months, she got over 200 Christmas baubles, garlands and other exhibits and the museum was opened in Miežiškiai community house. The recent collection has risen to 3 000 Christmas  exhibits. The oldest exhibits date back to the 19th century and the rest come from the Soviet times. You may find traffic light baubles with the green colour at the top. Guess why...? Many Christmas baubles and other decorations represent the country’s economic, cultural and political situations. For instance, there is a star for the Christmas tree top made of the medical glass flask indicating the lack of raw material to produce Christmas decorations at that time. Christmas baubles and other decorations were made out of what was at the hand in hard times: paper, plastic, felt, metal, foil and beads. Most of these were made in Russia, but you may also find Christmas decorations brought from the US, Poland and Germany.
