This is one of the most impressive attractions in Panevėžys district where you can see the largest European wild animals – Lithuanian bisons. They were widespread throughout Europe in the 16th century but have been exterminated in Lithuania by 1854.
European bisons are enrolled in the Red Book. Years ago, it was believed that these animals were extinct, because of agricultural development, hunting and other factors affecting their breed. However, its population has been restored again and over 200 of these roam free in Pašiliai forest. The first two Belavezha bisons were brought from Russia’s Prioksko Reserve in 1969, and were named Motok and Moda. In 1971, Moda got a baby bison and it was the first calf bison named Girinis, born in Pašiliai Bison Paddock. According to the international agreement, the names of bisons born in Pašiliai Bisons Paddock start with capital letters “gi” and are given international numbers. You will be surprised to see how friendly bison can be with other animals within the paddock.
